Sacred Heart of Jesus

Do you know how long ago the liturgical feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was instituted? 250 years ago, in 1765! It was the pope Clement XIII who did so, although at first only for Poland. Almost a hundred years later, in 1856, with the Blessed Pius IX as pope, the feast of the Sacred Heart took on a universal dimension. Since then, four encyclicals have been written to speak specifically about the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Here is the list, with a link to each of the encyclicals - enjoy! Photographs by Cathopic.

  1. ">http://www.corazones.org/doc/annum_sacrum.htm">Annum Sacrum. This encyclical was written by the pope Leo XIII and published on May 25, 1899. With it, this pope consecrated the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus: "The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the Sacred Heart of Jesus".We therefore decided that on the 9th, 10th and 11th of next June, in the church of each locality and in the main church of each city, specific prayers will be recited. On each of these days, the Litany of the Sacred HeartThe formula of consecration, approved by our authority, will be added to the other invocations. On the last day, the formula of consecration that We have sent to you will be recited". It is worth noting that one of Leo XIII's personal motives for this consecration was his gratitude for the cure of a dangerous illness.
  2. Miserentissimus Redemptor.Written by the pope Pius XI, This encyclical was issued on May 8, 1928. The theme on which it focused was the "atonement which all owe to the Sacred https://www.arguments.es/wp-content/uploads/comunicarlafe/2015/06/john-mark-smith-266553-unsplash-400x600.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="450" />Corazón de Jesús". Con este motivo, viene acompañada con una oración expiatoria al Sagrado Corazón.
  3. Summi Pontificatus. The first encyclical of Pius XIIIn the year he was elected pope (1939), he celebrated the fortieth anniversary of Leo XIII's encyclical, Annum SacrumThe Pope's message, by which he consecrated the world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was also the fortieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. It was also the fortieth anniversary of the priestly ordination of the new pope. In this document, Pius XII wrote: "There is no more urgent need, venerable brethren, than to make known the immeasurable riches of Christ (Eph 3:8) to the men and women of our time.".
  4. Haurietis aquas.A centenary after devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus became universal, in 1956, Pope Benedict XVI, the Pope Pius XII repeated the theme of the encyclical, speaking again about the Sacred Heart, specifically about its cult.

Finally, we also recommend, although it is not an encyclical, the apostolic letter of St. John Paul the Baptist. Paul VI Investigabiles divitias Christiwhich the pope wrote a few months before the closing of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. This year marked the second centenary since the liturgical feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was instituted.
