Biography of Saint Elizabeth

Cousin of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Aunt of Jesus Christ. She was married to Saint Zacharias, mother of St. John the Baptist. The words that, inspired by the Holy Spirit, she said about Mary, are part of the "Hail Mary", the best known of the prayers that the Church dedicates to the Mother of the Lord.

St. Elizabeth in the Gospel

St. Elizabeth is the protagonist of one of the episodes narrated in the Gospel of St. Luke about the Virgin Mary. She tells it like this: In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country to a city of Judah; and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And it came to pass, as soon as Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; and she cried with a loud voice and said, "Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb; and whence is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For as soon as the voice of your greeting reached my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who believed that the things spoken to her by the Lord would be fulfilled!  This moment is known as the Visitation and as reflected by the painter Raphael Sanzio is his painting The Visitation in the 15th century. This episode is an important moment in the recitation of the Holy Rosary and it is the second joyful mystery.
